Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Woman of Spirit Lecture

Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Woman of Spirit
How a woman's faith, grief and politics changed the world

Tuesday, October 19
5:30 PM
At Hartford Seminary's Women's Leadership Institute
76 Sherman Street, Hartford, CT

Explore the connection between Stowe's deep spirituality and her belief in social justice with Joan Hedrick, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Harriet Beecher Stowe: A Life and Charles A. Dana Professor of History at Trinity College.

Hedrick will discuss how Stowe's strong sense of spirituality resonated throughout her written work, anti-slavery views and leadership.  A reception and book-signing will follow the free event.

In addition to her best known novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Stowe wrote about religion, family and domestic life, and she often turned to religion during times of personal tragedy.

The Stowe Center and the Women's Leadership Institute of Hartford Seminary are co-sponsoring the event.  Copies of Hedrick's book will be available for purchase that evening and at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Museum Store.

The event is open to the public at no charge, but please register in advance with Hartford Seminary at ylaw@hartsem.edu or register online at http://www.hartsem.edu/.

The Women's Leadership Institute (WLI), now in its 15th year, is a program of applied spirituality for women at Hartford Seminary.  The Seminary was the first in the United States to admit women, and was the first nondenomiational theological institution in North America to name a female president.  WLI runs for the academic year and attracts women of various faiths from the region and beyond.

(Note: This event is not taking place at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center.)
